Extra insurance may not always be necessary when renting a car in Hawaii. Your existing auto insurance or credit card may provide rental-car coverage, depending on the policy. Rental companies may also offer optional coverage, such as a collision damage waiver (CDW), for an additional charge. Before renting, check your existing coverage and review the rental agreement to understand what is included and what additional protection may be available.
It depends on your travel plans. Uber can be more affordable if you are staying in a walkable area and only need occasional short trips. A rental car may provide better value if you plan to explore multiple attractions or travel around the island frequently. When comparing costs, consider the rental rate, parking, fuel, and the number of Uber rides you expect to take.
International visitors can generally drive in Hawaii with a valid driver’s license from their home country. An International Driving Permit (IDP) may also be required or recommended, particularly when the license is not in English. Before your trip, check the requirements of your rental company and carry your valid driver’s license and passport when picking up your rental car.
